GLOBAL SOUTH AND INDIA

Today’s explainer looks at the “Global South” — not a map of the southern hemisphere, but a broad community of countries shaped by colonial history, economic dependence, and uneven development across Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and parts of the Middle East, as noted by UNCTAD and scholars. The idea has deep roots in the Bandung Conference (1955), the Non Aligned Movement (1961), and the G77 (1964), which built solidarity for fairer trade, finance, and development. India has revived this agenda through the Voice of Global South and during the G20, where analysts said Global South priorities moved to the center. Recently, on UNGA sidelines, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar hosted a High Level Meeting of Like Minded Global South Countries, calling to reduce reliance on any single supplier or market, and pushing climate justice, digital sovereignty, and multilateral reform. The message: a fairer global order needs a stronger Southern voice. #globalsouth #IndiaAtUNGA #jaishankar #southsouthcooperation #climatejustice #digitalsovereignty #g20india #GlobalSouthRising #MultilateralReform #FairGlobalOrder #BandungSpirit #NAM #g77
