Beyond the Barbed Wire: Punjab’s Farmers at the International Border

PUNJAB INDIA

Movies like Border thrill us with heroes battling on the frontline, but Punjab’s real border warriors—our farmers—are trapped by barbed wire fencing inside Indian territory. In six districts, 31,000 acres in 220 villages lie beyond the fence, forcing farmers to beg BSF permissions daily, farm only short crops, and risk danger from stray Pakistani animals. No night access, constant IDs, and tension rule their lives. Rajasthan and Gujarat fare better with distant fences and barren land, but Punjab’s fertile fields suffer most. Good news: CM Bhagwant Mann says Centre agreed “in principle” to shift it to the actual International Border—full access, higher yields, booming incomes! Pathankot saw a small shift, but 15 days later, no final nod. Farmers wait desperately. Will this light up their lives? India’s vigilant guardians deserve freedom on their own soil.
